Fun Fact: What do you call a group of Mantas? A squadron!

If encountering Manta Rays in the wild is something you’ve been dreaming of, here are 6 amazing places to dive or snorkel with Manta Rays.

Kona, Hawaii

Kona is home to one of the most memorable night dives in the world. Watching giant yet graceful manta ray

s glide and somersault through the water is a sight you will always remember. You can experience Manta’s year-round here.

Cocos Island, Costa Rica

If you are looking for a several-day dive expedition and amazing diving experience, then Cocos Islands may be the spot for you. This Unesco Heritage Site is a secluded island 340 miles off of Costa Rica’s coast — taking 36 hours on a liveaboard. Besides the majestic Manta Rays, you may also encounter hammerhead sharks & whale sharks. The best time to dive with Manta Rays is from June through December. Keep in mind that this also coincides with the rainy season, which may mean a rough crossing to the island.

Yap, Micronesia

Yap is a remote island located between Palau and Guam where encounters with Manta Rays are possible year-round. It is also a great place to witness the stunning Manta-Ray mating dancing which occurs during their courtship months between October and March. These reefs are also home to many other marine wildlife including sharks, turtles, and more — making it a great dive trip.

If you are looking for more than just diving, Fiji, a dream destination for many, is another great place to encounter Manta Rays along with relaxing, adventuring, and immersing in the culture. The best time to encounter Manta Rays in Fiji is May to October.

While the Maldives is known for its stunning atolls and luxurious overwater bungalows, it offers a rich underwater experience as well. Some reef and dive sites act as a funnel, creating large concentrations of plankton and attracting a large number of manta rays as well as whale sharks. Choose to snorkel or dive — making it easy for all.

Galapagos Islands

The destination for all wildlife lovers. Besides the Giant Tortoise, the Galapagos Islands are home to Manta Rays as well as hammerhead sharks, white-tipped reef sharks, parrotfish and so much more. While there is no bad time to travel to the Galapagos, traveling between December and May offers the best for spotting Manta Rays.

While encounters can’t ever be guaranteed, these 6 amazing destinations are all great places to see Manta Rays.
