Can I share a secret with you?
I am not always the best at carving out time for self-care. As a mama, wife, and business owner there is always a running to-do list (on paper and in my head). Do any other busy parents feel the same?
While mom-guilt can be real, I also know that when I do take time to relax I am at my best, both at home and at work.
Travel, whether a quick getaway or far-flung dream adventure, will always be my go-to for recharging because it allows me to get away from the daily distraction and fully immerse. However, I also realize that practicing self-care at home is important too.
So, whether you are at home or on vacation, here are 7 easy ways to incorporate self-care into your day.
Pick your favorite way to stay active and find a time that fits your schedule the best! Is it a quick run or walk in the morning before everyone is awake; a peloton ride after everyone is down; or a yoga class over lunch? With many workouts now available online, you can take your favorite instructor with you on vacation or find the perfect hotel — the one with a great pool for your morning swims or the best fitness instructors.
Play and have fun
Sounds simple yet so difficult? I know, you already have a lot on your plate, but adding fun and play to your routine is a great way to unwind and get creative juices flowing. Even on the days when I don’t feel like it or feel like I don’t have time, a round of hide-and-seek always makes me smile. Make the time to play with your kids or start that new hobby you’ve been wanting to try. Maybe it’s practicing photography, dancing, learning to kitesurf, or doing more puzzles. Before you say you are too busy, here are 5 ways to create more opportunities for play in your life. When it comes to planning a vacation, share your dreams and hobbies with your travel advisor so that they can incorporate fun and new experiences into your trip.
Pamper yourself now and then
There is nothing wrong with taking the time and getting a massage, facial, or manicure. And you do not have to wait until you are on vacation. Plan for one in between all of the to-do's or make a day of it at a local spa. Need help finding a great spa around you? Feel free to reach out to me here.
Establish an evening routine
Unwind and end your day with a relaxing routine. Personally, when the house is quiet again at the end of the day, I like to calm down with a cup of tea and aromatherapy. The aromatherapy actually became part of my routine during a recent vacation where the hotel offered aromatherapy in our room. We discovered just how soothing it was. So, give that a go or find your own evening routine to unwind.
Turn off the devices
Turn off the pings, stop scrolling social media and leave behind the emails. Sure, you have to respond to emails for work and stay in touch with partners. At home, take a short 30 min break away from devices and enjoy the peace. It is freeing. On vacation, don’t feel the need to keep everyone updated. Take the new surroundings and experiences in.
Get out into nature
It can be as easy as getting outside. There is nothing more relaxing than being out in nature with the sounds of birds and waterfalls, the ocean breeze and breathtaking sites. When planning a vacation, choose a destination that has plenty of outdoor activities that you want to experience and sites you want to see.
From grocery shopping to taxes, cooking, laundry, and travel planning - I know you don’t have time for it all. So, what should you delegate? Choose tasks that you enjoy the least, tasks that you aren’t good at, or those that take too long. And isn’t that what vacations are about? Delegating everything except for the fun!
Whether at home or on vacation, I hope you make use of these 7 simple tips for incorporating self-care into your routine. No mom-guilt!
