9 Best Ways to Experience Hilton Head Island & Bluffton (From a Local)

I fell in love with the Lowcountry 8 years ago when I first visited Charleston, SC. It was the people, culture, beaches perfect for long walks, and the stunning meandering waterways teaming with wildlife.

We now call beautiful Bluffton, SC home, and get to take in all that the Lowcountry offers year-round, though Fall and Spring are my favorite. Besides exploring the beautiful Hilton Head beaches, which of course is a must, you might wonder what else there is to do around here.

Here are 9 other ways to explore the area along with 2 properties to call home during your next stay.

Get on the water. Hilton Head just minutes away, you might be drawn to explore. But it will be hard to find a reason to leave Montage Palmetto Bluff, a gracious and serene Lowcountry escape set along the beautiful May River with 200 guest accommodations, eight dining experiences, and three pool venues. This is a sporting paradise with golf, tennis, boating, biking, kayaking, fishing, sporting clays, equestrian activities, and more. After your outdoor activities, rejuvenate in the world-class Spa Montage; try the signature Heart of the Bluff treatment, complete with a stimulating scalp and body massage, and a soothing foot scrub.

Leave the car and hop on a bike. Enjoy Hilton Head Islands natural setting by bike. With over 60 miles of multi-use trails connecting the many beaches and destinations on the island, biking is a breeze.

Visit Pinckney Island. This one of my favorite spots for bird watching and nature walks. Enjoy the views of the water, look for Great Blue Herons, Egrets, butterflies and so much more.

Visit the Coastal Discovery Museum to learn about the local environment and history. Explore the property, historic buildings, and gardens on your own; take part in tours and informative lectures, and let the little ones get hands-on in the interactive the kids zone.

Old Town Bluffton Stroll through charming and unique Old Town Bluffton nestled on the May River. Explore its many art galleries and discover its rich history by visiting

Ziplining & Aerial Adventures Looking for something off the water? Add ziplining to your list or challenge yourself with an aerial adventure course!

Take a Helicopter Tour (if you dare). This will give you a completely different perspective of the island and marvel at the breathtaking surrounding waterways.

Book a tee time Whether you are a newbie or a pro, there is no shortage of golf courses to play a round of golf on world-class courses.

Explore Sea Pines Resort. Visit Lawson Stables for horseback riding along the trails or pony rides for the kids. Stroll through Harbour Town Marine, visit the lighthouse museum, and explore the Sea Pines Forest preserve. You can stay at the Inn & Club at Harbour Town at the Sea Pines resort, a wonderful property. However, if you choose to stay elsewhere you can still explore Sea Pines. A minimal entry fee per vehicle will get you into Sea Pines.
