There is nothing quite like a pod of dolphins joining you for a sunset sail, diving with sharks and manta rays, snorkeling with sea turtles, or spotting flamingos. It is always exciting, peaceful and an amazing bonding moment with those you get to share the extraordinary experience with.
You probably don't plan your vacation around visiting aquariums. Experiencing wildlife in their natural habitat on the other hand is often a highlight of many vacations.
Here are 8 extraordinary marine wildlife encounters to add to your next vacation:
Dive or snorkel with whale sharks
Whale sharks feed on plankton and swim at a speed of only 3 m.p.h. They do not pose any harm to humans. Belize, Maldives, Mozambique, Mexico and Australia are all great places to encounter these gentle giants and it is sure to be an extraordinary experience.
Spot a polar bear
To find polar bears, head to places in the arctic circle like Kaktovik, Alaska; Svalbard, Norway and Manitoba, Canada. Keep an eye out for other wildlife such as arctic foxes and caribou and the stunning northern lights.
Swim with jellyfish in Palau
Palua, a beautiful archipelago in the Pacific is full of spectacular marine life. Swimming in Palau's Jellyfish Lake is an odd and thrilling experience. The stingless jellyfish in the lake have adapted to feed on algae and therefore do not needing their stingers. There is plenty more to do and see in Palau from diving, kayaking, off-roading, exploring the WWII relics and museums.
Head to Scotland, Iceland, Alaska and Maine to spot these beautiful seabirds. Puffins spend most of their time at sea and return to land for the breeding season, a great time to go puffin watching. Like with many wildlife viewings, finding Puffins can be tricky, especially since they love to populate rocky cliffs.
Take in the sites of penguins
The Emperor Penguins of Antarctica are what most think of. Be sure to book an Antarctic cruise with a stop in The South Georgia Islands to also experience King Penguins, the second largest.
Penguins can be found farther north as well. Take in the sites of the African Penguins on the mainland at boulder beach or stony point.
The farthest north you will find a penguin is the Galapagos, Ecuador. Here you might even get lucky and have one swim up to you while snorkeling.
Dive with great white sharks in South Africa
Head to Gansbaai in the Western Cape of South Africa, an area known as one of the best places in the world to see Great White Sharks in their natural habitat. The team of shark enthusiasts that take you out are constantly striving to place shark conservation and education first.
Swim with manta rays
Watching giant yet graceful manta rays glide and somersault through the water is a site that will not be forgotten. Choose from a variety of wonderful destinations such as Hawaii, Yap, Great Barrier Reef, Mozambique, Fiji, Maldives and more for a great and relaxing vacation.
Go dolphin and whale watching
Dolphin or whale watching experiences are widespread and can be added to many vacations worldwide. Spot humpback whales in Hawaii and Alaska, orcas in Iceland and Antarctica, beluga whales in Manitoba, blue whales in the Azores and dolphins in Croatia, Italy, Caribbean, New Zealand and many more wonderful places.
